Big Step Coffee is an independently-owned coffee roasting brand led by Kyle Hayslip. Their approach is experimental—inherently curious about the process, flavors, and textures you can get through roasting beans. Their vision is to build a locally-inspired brand for coffee lovers. His roasts will be sold as a subscription service that pairs monthly curations + personalized playlists to accompany sipping a morning coffee.
I created a mini visual system and preliminary sticker package design concept that is lightweight—leading with utilitarian typography and a range of bold accents that mimic a jolt of energy. I included a graphic + photography design intention to aid with the expansion of the brand.
Kyle appreciated a hint of levity and personal storytelling within the identity. His son calls cracks in the sidewalk a “Big Step” when he bikes over them joyfully. We liked the visual metaphors that the wholesome adrenaline rush evoked: enter Beanie. Beanie is a retro-inspired 2D coffee bean mascot that complements the quirky, corner-turning primary mark.
